When the fearsome celtic warriors descended from Senonia (the territory of the river Seine where Paris now stands) stoods in the north-central area of the Marche. Perhaps their advance was stopping by the value of the Picenes, or perhaps, as we like to think, because they had found the most beautiful land they could never imagine. Because the Gauls were not those rude barbarians that the history – written by Rome – wanted to pass on. They were really people lover of life and beauty.
When you get in the sweet territory between Arcevia, Sassoferrato and Pergola, surrounded by wooded hills of the first and second ridge of the Apennines, you can understand why the Senones had chosen it as the heart of their presence in central Italy. Why they faced the extermination in order to defend in the tragic battle of Sentinum, in 295 BC.
Here, in a high plateau, stood the city of Civitalba (or Alba Gallica), of which few remains were found, including fragments of a frieze – originally placed on the tympanum of a temple – wich commemorates the defeat of the Gauls in that epic and decisive battle that followed the siege and the sac of Rome by their undisputed leader, the grand “Brennus”. Brennus returned triumphant with his army, laden with riches, and long celebrating the victory in the territory chosen as Senone’s homeland.
A serene land, secluded and populated with scattered willages, according to the kind of settlement of the Longobards, who in turn, after the fall of Rome, decided to stay and live here.
Only in recent decades, especially after the closure of the nearby Càbernardi’s sulfur mine, the progressive and unrestrainable abandonement started on.
Today most of the houses, villages, fields, are as “asleep” . Rural churches, already know in the eleventh century, like that of St. Peter de Giglionis and S.Lorenzino, retain traces of frescoes and hidden mystical constructive formulas.
They resist proudly the indifference of those who seems to have forgotten even the respect that is due to the Earth. And in that quiet pride, in that bond with a landscape of haunting harmony, “Beauty” remains untouched and moves the desire, in those who run this place for the first time, to stop and live here.
So, slowly, is renewed presence of people coming from the north in these lands. In Rotondo, the inhabited castle which dominated the area from the side of Mount Doglio, a frenchman is living from years, perhaps attracted by the voice of the ancestors Senones.
In Cerquettino, some dutch restored some beautiful farmhouses.
Entire village are waiting for people to guard to whom pass on the values, the stories that are contained in the stoned of the walls and in the solid beams.
People with whom to share the radiant days and enchanting sunsents, enjoiyng the silence and the popular feasts. While we watched a beautiful medieval houses for sale in Caparucci (at an incredible low price) a child called by the side of the road into the valley to hear the echo of his voice. A little further down the same street, a group of man were playing at “ruzzola” . You will be amazed by the atmosphere of these silent countries, as if you were hit by a ray of life so different and more real than the gray and crazy daily life of the city that seems to have only the appearance of life.
